President's Message

There is so much happening with CAEZ and in the world of Enterprise Zones, in general, that we decided it would be best to keep you informed through these regular “CAEZNEWS” updates! We want to keep them brief, yet informative… please give us your feedback by emailing me at LMoreno@sandiego.gov

CONFERENCE: CAEZ’s Annual Training Conference, hosted by the Coachella Valley Enterprise Zone on November 15-17, 2006, was a major success, with over 200 people attending! Thank you to all who participated and a special thank you to our Sponsors!

We have already begun planning the 2007 Conference, which will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Modesto and hosted by the Stanislaus Enterprise Zone on  October 24-26. Please save the date!

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS: The CAEZ Legislative Bill Report will soon be sent to
the membership and posted on the website. Keep an eye out for new legislation to be authored by Senator Lowenthal that will change the EIR requirement for EZ applications. Also, there will likely be a technical clean-up bill to AB 1550 (2006 EZ "reform" bill) authored by Assemblyman Arambula.

WOTC (Work Opportunity Tax Credit) has been extended through December2 007! WOTC allows employers to take up to $2,400 in federal tax credits for new employees who qualify. For more information on WOTC, please contact your local EDD representative. All WOTC certified employees are EZ Hiring Credit eligible…earning employers both state and federal tax credits!

Also, if you haven't done so already, don't forget to update your hiring tax credit calculation projections to reflect the increase in the State Minimum Wage ($7.50/hour) that was effective January 1, 2007, increasing the hiring credit cap per hour to $11.25.

MARKETING: The Marketing Committee will be focusing on the CAEZ website to
ensure that it is frequently updated. Updates are in progress at www.caez.org

MEMBERSHIP: Membership renewals were mailed at the end of January. Renewals not received by March will become delinquent…please reply soon! Questions regarding membership can be directed to Rosalind Guerrero at RGuerrero@Calexico.ca.gov

STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION: The annual strategic planning session was held at the end of January in Sacramento. The board of directors and advisors worked hard to develop an aggressive Action Plan for this year. Membership participation is critical to the success of this plan, so please consider joining one of CAEZ’s committees: Conference, Marketing, Government Affairs, or Fundraising. Email me at LMoreno@sandiego.gov with your committee interest.

The first board of directors meeting of the year was held on January 31st in Sacramento. We were pleased to have representatives from HCD, BTHA, FTB, and legislative staffers present and providing important program updates. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in Sacramento. The meeting is open to all…please try to attend! Agenda and more information will be available in March.
